CAITANYA BHAGAVAT 1

Penha, Brasil
January 10, 2017

I want to speak about Caitanya Bhagavat, the glorification about Lord Nityananda and Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

Vrindavan Das Thakur, in Caitanya Bhagavat, very nicely glorifies Lord  Nityananda Prabhu. Who is Nityananda? In Krsna-lila, He is Baladeva Prabhu and now He has come in Gaura-lila in the form of Nityananda Prabhu. Baladeva means, who gives all kinds of transcendental strength, power, in our heart (cit-bal).

Bala-hinena labhhyah, the Smriti sastra explains in this sanskrit verse, bala-hine na labhyah, who has no strength (power) cannot do anything. If you have no strength or power in your legs, then you cannot walk. If you have no power in your eyes, you cannot see. Bal means sakti, power, potency. In the same way, for you to practice the spiritual things, you need cit-bal, transcendental power, transcendental strength.

So all kinds of cit-bal (transcendental power) are coming from Baladeva Prabhu. In the same way, now in Gaura-lila, the same Baladeva Prabhu manifested in the form of Nityananda Prabhu. And Krsna from Krsna-lila, now appears in this Gaura-lila in the form of Caitanya Mahaprabhu, Gaurasundar. So, our bengali song explains:
Brajer kanai gaur holo
Brajer balai nitai holo
That means, in Braj (Vrindavan), Krsna now manifested in the form of Sacinandana Gaurahari and now the same Baladeva Prabhu appeared in this Navadvip Dham in the form of Nityananda Prabhu.

Without the causeless mercy of Nityananda Prabhu, by any method you cannot enter in Gaura-lila and you cannot even understand Krsna-lila.
saṁsārera pāra ha-i’ bhaktira sāgare
ye ḍubibe se bhajuka nitāichā̐dere
āmāra prabhura prabhu śrī gaurasundara
e baḍa bharasā chitte dhari nirantara
(Śrī Chaitanya-bhāgavat: Ādi-khaṇḍa, 17.152–153)
Vrindavan das Thajur explains, one who wants to cross the ocean of maya (samsara) and submerge in the divine ocean of love, Radha and Krsna, he must take shelter in the lotus feet of Lord Nityananda Prabhu. Only by the causeless mercy of Nityananda Prabhu, we can receive the mercy of Sacinandana Gaurahari.

Who is Gaurahari? Krsna! In Krsna-lila, Braj (Vrindavan), He is Krsna and now He appears in Navadvip Dham in the form of Sacinandana Gaurahari. But there are some confidential things, very secret things, explaining about Sacinandana Gaurahari. Who is Sacinandana Gaurahari? Radha and Krsna. The combined form of Radha and Krsna manifested in the form of Sacinandana Gaurahari.

Krsna is called ‘rasa-raja’, the embodiment of all kinds of mellow. And Srimati Radhika is called ‘mahabhava’, the embodiment of mahabhav. So now, rasa-raja and mahabhava, Krsna and Radha, combined together and manifested in the form of Sacinandana Gaurahari. And same Sacinandana Gaurahari, the combined form of Radha and Krsna, distributed the highest prema (Vrindavan-prem) to everybody and everybody is completely intoxicated with nama-sankirtana.

But what is rasa (mellows)? In this material world, people have some experience, some knowledge about it. What material rasas (mellows) you have experienced? Taking different kinds of juice, for example. What juice do you want, do you like? Lemon juice, any juice you can take! Everybody wants different juices (rasas). Some people like sweet juice (sweet rasa) and others like it a little bit sour. In the airplane, they distribute it, What kind of juice do you want? And then they give you different kinds. Also, if you have money, you can buy it in the supermarket, there are many kinds of rasas (juices) there.

Because in this material world, different people have different taste and according to their taste, they want different juices and they are drinking and having bliss. What kind of bliss (ananda) do you want? Bhojan-ananda, you want to eat many kinds of delicious food. What kind of food, bhojan, you want to eat? Pizza, pasta... Ice-cream, then your throat will choke and mahabhav will come. If you take the ice-cream, one, two or three pieces, then your throat will be completely choked and soared; you cannot speak and mucus will come.

This is true, in this material world people want these kinds of bliss (ananda). Bhojan-ananda, śaẏan-ananda... Some people want to sleep very nicely in a big bed, like Kumbhakarna, the brother of Ravan. Ravan, Vibhisana and Kumbhakarna, three brothers. They meditated, did stava-stutis and performed hard austerities to Lord Brahma (not the Brazilian Brahma, the four-headed Brahma).

Then, Brahmaji was very pleased and asked Vibhisana, What do you want? Vibhisana, very humbly told, He Lord Brahma, give me Rama-bhakti, sudha-bhakti, so I can do bhajan and sadhan and my mind will be always absorbed in Lord Rama. Then Brahmaji told, Okay, I am giving a blessing to you and Rama-bhakti will manifest in your heart. Then Brahmaji asked Ravan, What do you want? Ravan told, I want to conquer the whole universe, no one can defeat me, I want to become imortal. But Brahmaji told, you can conquer the whole world, but I cannot give the benediction of immortality to you, you have to die.

Then Brahmaji asked Kumbhakarna, What do you want? Kumbhakarna wanted to ask Lord Brahma, Give me the  Indra-asan, witch means, I want to become the king of heaven, Indra. But Maya-devi manifested on his tongue. Then Kumbhakarna told the opposite way,  śaẏan-asan, nidra-asan. He forgot about Indra and he asked for nidra-asan, that means, I will always sit in the bed of sleep, unlimited time I can sleep and never get up. Then Ravan told Brahmaji, What is the life of my brother, if unlimited time he sleeps, his life will be useless. He Brahmaji, give a blessing to my brother. Then Brahmaji told, okay, I am giving another blessing, every six months, he will wake up, eat as he likes and after one day, sleep again for six months. That means, every six months, he will wake up for only one day. For this regard, Kumbhakarna is called nidra-asan, always sleeping and every six months, he wakes up.

In this world, many people want to sleep but they cannot do it. So they take sleeping pills and then they are sleeping. Many people are also taking many kinds of drugs, but you should not take drugs, because your brain will be damaged and then one day you will die. If you cannot sleep, chant loudly the holy names, then automatically sleepiness will come.

What does Krsna’s consciousness mean? Follow the four principles and give up all kinds of drugs. You have to follow the four principles: not eating meat, not taking any kind of intoxication, no illicit sex and no gambling. Plain living and high thinking. Chant the holy names and do bhajan and sadhan to Lord.

In this material world, many people are intoxicated with different kinds of bliss (ananda), but the topmost bliss is the sankirtan-ananda (chanting the holy names) and so much bliss (ananda) will come.

Krsna is called rasa-raj, He is the embodiment of all kinds of mellows (rasas). But this is the transcendental mellow, not the material mellow. In this material world, rasa (mellows) gives many kinds of distress and unhappiness. Try to understand this philosophy. For this regard, Rupa Gosvami, in Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu (invocation sloka), glorifies Krsna, who is the embodiment of rasa-raj.
akhila-rasamrta-sindhu
prasmara-ruci-ruddha-taraka-palih
kalita-syama-lalito
radha-preyan vidhur jayati
(BRS 1.1.1)
Akhila-rasamrta-sindhu, Krsna is called the embodiment of endless ocean of the transcendental mellows.

In this material world, there is a big ocean and big waves are coming. And many people are jumping in the waves of the ocean. People submerge in the water of the ocean. They are also enjoying sense gratification. But after a couple of hours, they are feeling so much pain, mucus are coming, maybe fever, many kinds of diseases, distress. And many people are also surfing. But if you unbalance a little bit, then you break your legs, hands, chest. Surfer and suffer!

But in the transcendental ocean, if you submerge, there are not any kind of unhappiness or distress. So for this regard Rupa Gosvamipad explains, Krsna is called akhila-rasamrta-sindhu, the embodiment of fathomless, bottomless ocean of mellows. In this ocean, many kinds of mellows (rasas) manifest: santa, dasya, sakhya, vatsalya and madhurya (sweetness). And you will always submerge in the ocean of the transcendental mellows. As like a big swan diving in the water of the ocean, up and down. In the same way, if you enter in this transcendental ocean of Krsna, then you can realize how it is beautiful, there is so much taste and ananda samudra magna; you will always submerge in the transcendental bliss.

Because you have no knowledge about the transcendental bliss (ananda), for this regard you are also enjoying these material rasas and suffering. But if a little bit you just touch the water of the transcendental ocean, then your life will be successful.

You have no idea about the topmost expensive sweet. For this regard, now you are taking the very low grade sweet, as like, gur (molasses), but if you take the highest sweet, ladoo, kachori... In Vrindavan there are many kinds of sweets, rasa-gulla. Then automatically you will give up the taste of gur, molasses. But how to taste this transcendental mellows? So Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu told, you simply chant the holy names, nama-sankirtan!

Only by the chanting of the holy names, nama-sankirtan, transcendental mellow (taste) will come.

So Caitanya Mahaprabhu, that means, Krsna, is the embodiment of rasa-raj and same Srimati Radhika appeared in the form of mahabhav, embodiment of the transcendental bhava. So rasa-raj and mahabhav combined together and manifested in the form of Sacinandana Gaurahari.

(Verse) Same Krsna appeared in the form of Sacinandana Gaurahari  and distributed and intoxicated all the living entities with nama-sankirtan. Even tiger, lion, monkey, everybody is completely intoxicated by the sweet holy names of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

Once Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu was chanting the holy names at midnight and Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s lotus feet touched the body of the tiger and tiger stood up and raised his two pawns. Caitanya Mahaprabhu told, Krsna kaho! Krsna kaho!, chant Krsna-nam (holy names). Then the tigers raised their pawns and chanted:

Hare Krsna Hare Krsna
Krsna Krsna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama
Rama Rama Hare Hare

Nama-sankirtan, how it is powerful!
ceto-darpaṇa-mārjanaṁ bhava-mahā-dāvāgni-nirvāpaṇaṁ
śreyaḥ-kairava-candrikā-vitaraṇaṁ vidyā-vadhū-jīvanam
ānandāmbudhi-vardhanaṁ prati-padaṁ pūrṇāmṛtāsvādanaṁ
sarvātma-snapanaṁ paraṁ vijayate śrī-kṛṣṇa-saṇkīrtanam
(Sri Siksastakam, 1)

In this Kali Yuga, what to do, just simply chant the holy names, no need anything else.

(Verse) The essence of all the scriptures is nama-sankirtan.

cirad adattam nija-gupta-vittam
sva-prema-namamrtam aty-udarah
a-pamaram yo vitatara gaurah
krsno janebhyas tam aham prapadye
(Cc. Madhya 23.1)
Krsna das Kaviraj Gosvami, in Caitanya-Caritamrta explains that Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu indiscriminately distributed this braj-prem to everybody. He did not discriminate who is qualified and who is unqualified. (Verse) Who was coming in front of Him, He gave the highest prem, through nama-sankirtan

Although this prem is very very rare, durlabha.

This prem, braj-prem, is very very rare for Brahma, Siva and Narada. And now Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Nityananda Prabhu are going house to house, to everybody, distributing this prem to everybody: take this! Even those who don’t want to receive it, Lord Caitanya, by force is giving, take this, why not. By force He is giving.

Because Gaurasundar and Nityananda Prabhu are called the embodiment of munificence and magnanimousness. Miser person are just keeping but those who are magnanimous and munificent people are giving everything, Take this, without discrimination, Take this, how much you will take? Take more, more!

In Krsna-lila, Krsna distributed the braj-prem only in Vrindavan but same Krsna has come in the form of Sacinandana Gaurahari and He distributed everywhere. In Vrindavan, outside Vrindavan, everywhere. For this regard,
cirad adattam nija-gupta-vittam
sva-prema-namamrtam aty-udarah
a-pamaram yo vitatara gaurah
krsno janebhyas tam aham prapadye
(Cc. Madhya 23.1)
I pay my obeisances unto the lotus feet of Krsna, who now manifested in the form of Sacinandana Gaurahari and distributed the highest prem through His own name. Every yugas He did not distribute this prem but in this Kali Yuga, Krsna has come in the form of Sacinandana Gaurahari so He is giving this prem to everyone.

(Verse) Krsna das Kaviraj Gosvami explains, Caitanya Mahaprabhu, Krsna’s incarnations are coming in every yugas but  they are not giving braj-prem. Only in one day of Brahma He comes. And in the end of Dvapara Yuga (the beginning of the Kali Yuga), the same Krsna manifested in the form of Gaurahari and distributed this highest prem.

Satya, Treta, Dvapara, Kali, rounding one thousand times. Then in the end of Dvapara Yuga, Krsna comes. When Dvapara Yuga finishes, in the beginning of Kali Yuga, same Krsna comes in the form of Sacinandana Gaurahari and that time He distributed this braj-prem to everybody.

In this material world many people perform Bhakti (devotional service to Lord) but that Bhakti is called vaidhi-bhakti, following rules and regulation, or aisvarya-mayi-bhakti, in the opulence mood. But Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu is thinking, No, in this Kali Yuga I will give the highest Bhakti, raga-bhakti, braj-bhakti.

(Verse) Only by practicing the rules and regulations of the devotional service to Lord you cannot attain braj-prem. So for this regard Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu is giving the highest braj-prem, braj-bhakti.

(Verse) Again, Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu told, in every yugas, all the yuga-avatar (incarnations) are coming and that yuga-avatar is called Krsna’s amsa-avatar. Rama, Nirsimha, Kalki are called amsa. But Caitanya Mahaprabhu is called amsi, which means the source of all incarnations, avatari. So Caitanya Mahaprabhu, Sacinandana Gaurahari, only He will give braj-prem, no one else can do it.

So in this Kali Yuga, worship only Sacinandana Gaurahari, Gaura-aradhan. Always remember Sacinandana Gaurahari, always remember His sweet names, Gaura-nam.

Bolo!

gaura gaura gaura gaura gaura gaura raksha-mam (save me)
gaura gaura gaura gaura gaura gaura pahi-mam (protect me)

Translation:

O mind, just speak about Gaura. Gaura’s name is the abode of nectar and the embodiment and bestower of divine love.

In sleep, there is Gaura; in dreams, there is Gaura—Gaura is the star of my eyes. In life, there is Gaura; in death, there is Gaura. Gaura is a most precious necklace.

Keeping Gaurāṅga inside my heart, I will sit in a secluded place and according to my heart’s desire, I will keep my eyes fixed on His moon-like form.

Without Gaura I cannot live. I have made Gaura the essence of my existence. May my life be spent chanting the name of Gaura. I do not desire anything else.

Gaura’s movement, Gaura’s appearance, Gaura’s smiling face, Gaura’s love, and Gaura’s form - all penetrate my heart.

Gaura is my dharma, Gaura is [the object of] my karma, and Gaura is the essence of the Vedas. I surrender my life at Gaura’s lotus feet. Gaura will take me across [the ocean of material existence].

Narahari dāsa begs for shelter at the feet of the servant of the servant of that person in whose heart the sound of ‘Gaura’ and the treasure of Gaura has manifested.

Radhe Syam
Radhe Syam
Radhe Syam
Radhe Syam

When Krsna feels pangs of separation and He is in the mood of Srimati Radhika, feeling separation from Krsna, that is called, gaura-lila, vipralambha-mayi-lila, separation mood.

Krsna is thinking, I am Radha, and is feeling separation from Krsna. This separation mood actually is called gaura-lila, vipralambha-mayi-lila. And when Radha and Krsna meet together in Goloka Vrindavan, that is called sambhoga-mayi-lila, madhurya-lila.

So Krsna has two types of lila, vipralambha-mayi-lila (gaura-lila) and sambhoga-mayi-lila (Radha and Krsna lila in Vrindavan).

So that means only Krsna can give braj-prem, no one else. Even Rama, Nirsimha, Kalki, they will not give you braj-prem, they will give you Vaikuntha-prem or deliver you from this material world.
santv avatārā bahavaḥ
paṅkaja-nābhasya sarvato-bhadrāḥ
kṛṣṇād anyaḥ ko vā latāsv
api prema-do bhavati
(Laghu-bhāgavatāmṛta, 1.5.37)
In Laghu Bhagavatamrta, Srila Rupa Gosvamipad quoted this verse, santv avatārā bahavaḥ/paṅkaja-nābhasya. That means, Lord Krsna has many incarnations, Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Nrisimha. And time to time they descend from Vaikuntha-dham and come in this material world to re-establish the varnasram-dharma, kill the demons and give the liberation (mukti) to all the living entities.

Why these incarnations are coming in this material world? To protect His devotees, this is the main reason.
yadā yadā hi dharmasya
glānir bhavati bhārata
(Bhagavad-gita, 4.7)

paritranaya sadhunam
vinasaya cha duskritam
dharma-samsthapanarthaya
sambhavami yuge yuge
(Bhagavad-gita, 4.8)
In every yugas, Krsna incarnations, Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Nrisimha, when the demons destroyed all the varnasram-dharma and santa-mahatma prayed to Lord, then His incarnations are coming. Re-establish the varnasram-dharma, kill the demons and protect the sadhus. Actually, Lord comes in this material world by the calling of His devotees.

Also in Krsna-lila, when the demons disturbed in this Prithvi, disturbing everybody, killing the cows, Kamsa, Jarasandha, they disturbed everybody, killing the cows, killing the brahmanas. That time the whole world was full of sinful activities. Prithvi-devi could not tolerate the sinful activities. Then Prithvi-devi prayed to all the demigods and demigoddess, Please help me, because the demons are disturbing me, I cannot tolerate the sinful activities of the demons. And that time all the demigods and demigoddess told to Prithvi-devi, keep patience and come with us.

Then Prithvi-devi manifested in the form of Go-mata (cow) and all they came to Lord Brahma and prayed to him. Because Brahma is the creator of this material world. Then Brahmaji told, I can help you, but come with me. Then all the demigods and demigoddess, Go-mata (Prithvi-devi) they also came on the beach os Cir-samudra, the ocean of milk.
vikhanasārthito viśva-guptaye
sakha udeyivān sātvatāṁ kule
(Gopī-gita, 4)
Vikhanasa is Brahma. He Krsna, You appeared in this material world by the prayer of Brahmaji and protected this material world.
na khalu gopīkā-nandano bhavān
akhila-dehinām antarātma-dṛk vikhanasārthito viśva-guptaye
sakha udeyivān sātvatāṁ kule
(Gopī-gita, 4)
When sadhus pray to Lord, then Lord appears in this material world. Many people are suffering in this material world. Demons disturb everybody. But when the highest category of sadhu pray to Lord, then Lord appears. Otherwise, Lord will not appear. Demon can kill many cows, kill many brahmanas, many things, but Lord will still not come. When Lord will come? When the highest class of devotees pray to Lord.

Then when Brahma prayed to Lord Visnu, Lord Visnu opened His eyes and pacified Brahmaji, all the demigods and demigoddess and Go-mata, Keep patience! In this way, Lord Visnu pulled out His two hairs, one is white (personification of Baladeva Prabhu) and one is black (Krsna) and He told, Soon My master, Krsna Vrajendranandana-Syamasundara, purna-avatari, Krsna and Baladeva Prabhu, will soon appear in this material world and they will re-establish the varnasram-dharma, kill the demons and preach the highest prem to everybody.

So Sacinandana Gaurahari, same Krsna, now has come in this Kali-Yug and He distributed this highest prem. In Krsna-lila or Ram-lila, they killed all the demons and held weapons, but in Gaura-lila, the same Krsna did not hold any weapons.

In the incarnation of Krsna and Ram, They became very angry. Even Krsna, He became very angry to Sisupala. He killed many demons with His sudarsan-cakra and cut the head of Sisupala. In the incarnation of Ram, He also killed many demons, Tarakasur, Ravan, Kumbhakarna. But in the incarnation of Sacinandana Gaurahari, He did not hold any weapons, no sudarsan-cakra. When Jagai and Madai hit the head of Lord Nityananda Prabhu, then Mahaprabhu told, Sudarsan-cakra! But Nityananda Prabhu held the lotus feet of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu and told, In this incarnation of Gaura (Gaura-avatar) You promised You would not hold any weapons. Then sudarsan-cakra returned back. In the incarnation of Gaurasundar, He did not hold any weapons, but He held the weapon of nama-sankirtan (namastra). Nama - astra, astra means weapon. So, with the namastra He cut all the anarthas (unwanted things), lust, anger, everything, from the heart of the living entities and distributed the highest braj-prem.

In this incarnation of Sacinandana Gaurahari, Gaura-avatar, He distributed the highest prem. Just simply chant the holy names.
