So, couple of months before I discussed about Brhad-Bhagavatamrtam, composed by Srila Sanatan Gosvamipad and I talked about the history of Gopa-kumar.

Gopa-kumar told his own realization about bhajan and sadhan in front of his disciple, Mathura brahmana. When he chanted gopal-mantra, which he received from his guru Jayanta, then he proceeded from Vrindavan to Triveni, where the three rivers are meeting together (Ganga, Yamuna and Sarasvati) and he saw the brahman who worshiped salagram-sila and that brahman glorified about Lord. According to the instruction of the brahman, Gopa-kumar arrived in the South India temple, where he worshiped the thakurji. Then he came to Jaganath Puri, became the king there and worshiped Lord Jaganath very nicely. We also discussed these things, how gopal-mantra fulfilled all his desires.

Then he proceeded to Svargaloka (heavenly planet). Gopa-kumar heard the glories of Lord, who manifested in heavenly planet, that is called Upendra, and the demigods and demigoddess, how they worshiped to Him. So Gopa-kumar, by the chanting of his gopal-mantra, arrived in the heavenly planet and he saw how beautiful is there.

In heavenly planet, Nandankanan, a very nice beautiful forest, many kinds of flowers are blossoming, sweet fragrance coming and there is also tira-basanta, that means the spring season is always going on, everybody’s heart is overjoyed and also amrta-bhojan, those who are the residents of heaven drink the sweet nectar. In heavenly planet no one become old and there are not any kind of diseases; they are all absorbed with their own sense gratifications. He saw theses things, how people were always absorbed with their sense gratifications. So, Gopa-kumar noticed these things, but by the causeless mercy of Lord, he came in the assembly house of devatas, deva-samad

One day he saw Mother Aditi there and all the demigods and demigoddess surrounding Mother Aditi and she recited many stava-stuti of Lord. Then Lord manifested in the form of Upendra, Upendra Bhagavan. Actually this is called shanka, chakra, gada, padma, Upendradev, He manifested in there. And all the demigods and demigoddess payed their obeisances to Lord and Lord gave mercy to them with His smiling face and love and affection with all the demigods and demigoddess. Especially, Upendra has so much love and affection with Mother Aditi. And they all offered many kinds of delicious prasad to Lord Upendradev, then Lord Upendradev was very happy with their love and affection.

In this way, Gopa-kumar noticed how the demigods and demigoddess have love and affection with Lord Upendradev and how they serve to Lord. Before he heard the glories of Svargaloka, the residents of Svargaloka, now he directly saw with his own eyes the residents of heaven, Svargaloka, svargaloka-vasi, how they worship to Lord Upendradev.

After few hours, Lord Upendradev, that means Lord Narayan, shanka, chakra, gada, padma, He disappeared. When Lord disappeared, Gopa-kumar felt pang of separation from Lord. And that time Gopa-kumar glorified Mother Aditi and also the king of heaven, Indra, and they pacified Gopa-kumar. ‘He Gopa-kumar, don’t worry, again tomorrow Lord will give us darsan, so you have to stay’. By the love and affection of Mother Aditi, especially because of Mother Aditi, Gopa-kumar was staying in the heavenly planet and he’s chanted the gopal mantra. Gopa-kumar, in his life, always chanted this gopal-mantra. Because this gopal-mantra is very powerful, this gopal-mantra is called mantra-raj. Mantra-raj means the king of all the mantras. If you chant this gopal-mantra in the proper way, then all your desires will be fulfill and you will attain your highest perfection.

So Bhaktivinod Thakur, in Bhajana-rahasya, explains how in the proper way we will chant the mantra. There are five processes to chant the mantra.

First, namartha-cintana. That means that when you chant the mantra which you received from your guru, then you are remembering the meaning of this mantra. First, namartha-cintana. Nama artha cintana, namartha-cintana. What is the real meaning about this mantra.

Second, nyasa mudra, some process, mudra, according to the instruction of guru, you have to chant this mantra ten times, or twelve times. According to the instruction and some mudra you have to perform, then you can chant the mantra.

Third, prapatti, completely surrender to the lotus feet of your mantra-adistatri-devata. Mantra-adistatri-devata means the presiding deities of mantra. When you chant this mantra, your mind should be concentrated with your mantra-adistatri-devata, the presiding deities of your mantra, mantra-adistatri-devata

Then saranagati, surrender to the lotus feet of mantra-adistatri-devata. There are six limbs of saranagati:

ānukūlyasya saṅkalpaḥ prātikūlyasya varjanam

rakṣiṣyatīti viśvāso goptṛtve varaṇaṁ tathā
ātma-nikṣepa-kārpaṇye ṣaḍ-vidhā śaraṇāgatiḥ
(CC Madhya 22.100)
These are the six limbs of saranagati

(1) ānukūlyasya saṅkalpaḥ: you have to accept those who are favorable for Bhakti; (2) those who are unfavorable for Bhakti should be rejected.

(3) rakṣiṣyatīti: always think, Krsna is my maintainer and (4) Krsna is my protector.

(5) ātma-nikṣepa: you offer yourself to the lotus feet of Krsna.

(6) kārpaṇye: always be very humble and then you chant the holy names.

These are the six limbs of saranagati

After saranagati, the fifth, ātma-nivedan; ātma-nivedan means you have to offer your soul to the lotus feet of your mantra-adistatri-devata, the presiding deities of mantra.

So Gopa-kumar everyday chants this mantra in the proper way. He was never absorbed with any material sense gratifications. This is the characteristic and the specialty of Gopa-kumar, Gopa-kumar vaisistya, the specialty of the life history of Gopa-kumar. In his life, he was never attached with any kind of sense gratification. He saw many kind of sense gratification in the heavenly planet, which one can easily get but he did not attach with any kind of material sense gratification.

In the same way, if you want to do bhajan and sadhan, you should not attach with any kind of sense gratification. Especially if you come in Braj Parikrama, Braj Mandal Parikrama, Navadvip Parikrama, you should not enjoy any kind of sense gratification. Very carefully.

So Gopa-kumar, when he chanted the gopal-mantra, his desire is coming in his mind, ‘If I would become the king of heaven, Indra, then maybe I would serve to Lord Upendra more and more’. This type of servitor mood is coming in his heart. Because this is the symptom of Bhakti. When Bhakti manifests in ones heart, there are three symptoms: bhaktih paresanubhavo viraktir anyatra (SB 11.2.42).

Bhakti means seva-vrtti bhajati sevatiti bhakti. That means, when Bhakti-devi, sudha-bhakti, manifests in ones heart, first his seva-vrtti will increase more and more. And you’ll be thinking, ‘I will serve more and more and more’. As like Hanuman, he is thinking ‘I am kinkaraham kinkarami, aham kinkarami, aham kinkarami’, that means, how will I fulfill the desire of my master. This is the first symptom of Bhakti, Bhakti means seva-vrtti. Hanuman is always thinking, ‘How to serve my ista-deva, Lord Ramacadra’. So Bhakti means seva-vritti paresanubhavo

And second, realization is coming in his heart from his ista-deva. That is called paresanubhavo. And the third symptom is called viraktir. Viraktir means detachment from all the material relationship. Because this is Bhakti. When Bhakti manifests in ones heart, these are the symptoms. You will not enjoy any kind of sense gratification and how to fulfill the exclusively pleasure or fulfill the desire of guru and vaisnavas. This is very important.

So very carefully, everybody do bhajan and sadhan and chant nama, gayatri-mantra and stay in Braj. Sadhu-sanga, nama-sankirtan, bhagavat-sravan, mathura-vasa, sri-murtira-sraddhaya-sevana. You have to be intense in always associate with pure devotee, that is called sudha-bhakta-sanga. Without the association of pure sudha-bhakta, your heart will be never purified.

Gopa-kumar, when he chanted this mantra, just one desire is coming in his heart, ‘If I would become the king of heaven then I could serve to Lord more and more’. So this type of desire is coming in his heart.

Nama and mantra fulfill all our desires.

nāma cintāmaṇiḥ kṛṣṇaś

caitanya-rasa-vigrahaḥ
pūrṇaḥ śuddho nitya-mukto
’bhinnatvān nāma-nāminoḥ
(Padma Purana/Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu 1.2.233)
Nāma cintāmaṇiḥ kṛṣṇaś caitanya-rasa-vigrahaḥ. Holy names are as like cintamani. Cintamani means all the desires are coming.
So Gopa-kumar, when he chanted this mantra, his desire is coming, how to serve to Lord more and more. Without getting the position of Indra he can’t serve in the proper way to Lord Upendra. For this regard, Gopa-kumar was thinking, ‘If I would get the position of Indra then I could serve to Lord according to my own desires’. This mantra always fulfilled his desires.

When Gopa-kumar is thinking this, by the Krsna’s maya, demons attacked the heavenly planet. Then Indra, who is the king of heaven, ran away. Emergency period has come. So all the demigods and demigoddess are thinking, ‘Indra is not in here, who will take charge, the position of Indra?’. And that time, by the causeless mercy of Lord, all the demigods and demigoddess told to Gopa-kumar, ‘Take the position of Indra’. So Gopa-kumar took the charge, the position of Indra and all the demons were afraid and they ran away.

Now Gopa-kumar is the king of heaven, Svargaloka. But one thing, Gopa-kumar is the king of heaven, but he is not absorbed with any kind of sense gratification. Generally, those who take the position of Indra enjoy all kind of sense gratification. But Gopa-kumar was completely detached from all kind of sense gratification. Because in his heart there was only one desire, how to serve to Lord Upendra more and more. For this regard, Gopa-kumar served to Lord Upendra and all the demigods and demigoddess became very happy with the behavior of Gopa-kumar.

So in this way, Gopa-kumar also worshiped Lord Upendra and especially Mother Aditi is very pleased with Gopa-kumar. And Gopa-kumar glorified Mother Aditi, he told, ‘He Mother Aditi, Lord Upendra appeared here for your love and affection’. Because Mother Aditi asked to Vamanadev, ‘Oh my son...’, that means Lord appeared from the womb of Mother Aditi as her son. And that time Mother Aditi told to Vamanadev, ‘When any problem will come in heaven, you have to protect my sons and you have to give darsan to me’. For this regard, Lord Upendra, Bhagavan Narayan, everyday used to come in the assembly house of Svargaloka. Svarga-sudharma-sabha is there. In Svargaloka there is one assembly house called sudharma-sabha. That time Krsna also took this sudharma-sabha in Dvarka-puri. Krsna took two things from the heavenly planet in Dvaraka-puri, one is parijat tree and the other is sudharma-sabha, one assembly house.

So now coming in this way, Gopa-kumar, when he glorified Mother Aditi, she told, ‘He Gopa-kumar, it is not by my bhajan and sadhan that Lord Upendra is giving darsan to us. Actually, Lord Upendra Bhagavan is giving darsan to me by his own parental mood, vatsalya-bhava’. So, Gopa-kumar also worshiped to Upendradev and all the demigods and demigoddess were very happy with the behavior of Gopa-kumar.

But in Svargaloka, he listened hari-katha from many munis and rsis. They came in there, Svargaloka, and they glorified Janaloka, Tapoloka and others lokas-katha. And some curiosity is coming in Gopa-kumar, where is Janaloka and Tapoloka, what people are doing in there. In Tapoloka there are nine rsis who especially stay in there and they also meditate to Lord.

So Gopa-kumar came to Tapoloka and saw the tapasi, they closed their eyes and meditated to Lord and they are completely renounced. And that time they also glorified Gopa-kumar, ‘He Gopa-kumar, why are you feeling separation from Lord?’. That means, Lord Upendradev is not always giving darsan in the heavenly planet. When Mother Aditidevi prayed, then Lord Upendra appeared, but other times, Gopa-kumar did not see Lord Upendra. For this regard, Gopa-kumar’s mind was very disturbed and he felt pang of separation from Lord. In Gopa-kumar’s life, mostly he felt pang of separation, viraha-agni, feeling the separation of Lord.

Our sastras explain, in the sadhaka stage, sadhaka should feel separation from guru and Krsna, that is called viraha-agni. Viraha-agni, the fire of separation purifies our heart. Giving an example, fire can burn everything. In the same way, when sadhaka is feeling separation, then viraha-agni, the fire of separation, destroys all his anarthas

Srila Kiva Gosvamipad gives an example, in the heart of sadhaka, many kinds of anarthas are there. The anarthas are as like snake (sarpa). Snake resides in the hole, is living in the hole, don’t come out. Jiva Gosvamipad explains that if you take one stick and beat over the hole, the snake will never come out. So how will the snake come out from the hole? Need fire. If you put the fire inside the hole, automatically the snake will come out. In the same way, in the sadhaka’s heart there are many kinds of anarthas (unwanted things). avidya-asmita-raga-dvesa-abhinivesa. Lust, anger, many kinds of anarthas are there. How these anarthas will come out from the cave of the heart of the sadhakas? How will all the anarthas, snake, come out from the cave of his heart? For this regard, Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu told, you have to chant the holy names with viraha, viraha-agni. With the mood of separation and chanting the holy names, then the viraha-agni, the fire of separation enters in the cave of your heart and inside of your heart, all kinds of anarthas automatically will come out. This is the process. Our Jiva Gosvamipad and Visvanath Cakravartipad explain that in this Kali Yuga, sadhaka has to chant the holy names with separation, viraha-agni

When Gopa-kumar was staying in the heavenly planet, sometimes Lord Upendradev did not manifest Himself. So Gopa-kumar felt pang of separation from Lord and he was always crying. But sometimes Mother Aditi pacified Gopa-kumar and also glorified Lord Upendradev. Lord Upendradev is always thinking He is the younger brother of Indra, for this regard He is called Upa-Indra, Upendra, Lord Visnu. So when Gopa-kumar felt pang of separation from Lord Upendra, sometimes the munis and rsis of Janaloka and Tapoloka pacified him, ‘He Gopa-kumar, why are you crying here? Just meditate to Lord, then Lord will give darsan in your heart and you will forget all kinds of separation from Him’. In this way, the rsis pacified Gopa-kumar. But Gopa-kumar became very sad, because he felt pang of separation from Lord.

So the people and rsis of Tapoloka glorified Gopa-kumar, ‘He Gopa-kumar, why are you feeling separation from Lord, just close your eyes and meditate upon Him, then you can see the lotus feet of Lord’. In Tapoloka no one can feel pang of separation from Lord, because with their meditation they are always taking darsan to Lord. For this regard, the people and rsis glorified Gopa-kumar, ‘He Gopa-kumar, you can stay in our Tapoloka and start to meditate to Lord’. Then his mind was very disturbed, he is thinking, ‘No, this place in not good for me’. Then he proceeded to Brahmaloka (Satyaloka), the place of Brahma. Because he heard the glories of Satyaloka, Brahmaji is the creator of this material world and he is the very nearest and dearest of Lord.

In Brahma-samhita, Lord Himself glorified Brahma. And Lord Krsna gave gopal-mantra and kama-gayatri to him with his flute. Brahmaji got gayatri-mantra from the flute of Krsna. And the residents of Brahmaloka (Satyaloka) live thousand and thousand years in there. Because one day of Brahma means one thousand catur-yugas. So Brahma’s age is one thousand catur-yugas

And Brahmaji worshiped the lotus feet of his ista-deva Sahaswra Sirsha Visnu. Everyday Brahmaji performed fire sacrifice and that time Lord Sahaswra Sirsha Visnu manifested from there. And then Brahmaji is giving blessing to everybody with his very nice and beautiful love and affection or sidelong glance.

Gopa-kumar noticed how Brahmaji is the very nearest and dearest of Lord Sahaswra Sirsha Visnu. Gopa-kumar is thinking, ‘If I would become Brahma, then I would serve more and more’. This desire is coming in his heart.

nāma cintāmaṇiḥ kṛṣṇaś

caitanya-rasa-vigrahaḥ
pūrṇaḥ śuddho nitya-mukto
’bhinnatvān nāma-nāminoḥ
(Padma Purana/Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu 1.2.233)
Holy name is non-different from Sri Hari and fulfill all our desirers, that is called cintamani. So Gopa-kumar chanted this mantra, ‘If I could take the position of Brahmaji, then I would serve more and more’. When he is thinking this, by the yoga-maya, Brahma’s age already finished, he left that place and then Gopa-kumar became the king of Satyaloka. And he very nicely worshiped his ista-devaSahaswra Sirsha Visnu, chanting this Vedas mantra:
Oṁ tad viṣṇoḥ paramaṁ padaṁ
sadā paśyanti sūrayaḥ
divīva cakṣur ātatam
(Ṛg Veda 1.22.20)
In this way they also started the stava and stutis
Oṁ tad viṣṇoḥ paramaṁ padaṁ
sadā paśyanti sūrayaḥ
divīva cakṣur ātatam
(Ṛg Veda 1.22.20)
This Vedas mantra they are chanting. But Gopa-kumar’s mind was very disturbed, he does not want to listen about the catur-muk Brahma or Sahaswra Sirsha Visnu.

Actually, Gopa-kumar’s ista-deva is called Vrajendranandan Syamasundar. Those who are devotees of madhurya-rasa always want to see their ista-deva Vrajendranandan Syamasundar. For this regard, Gopa-kumar, though he was in Brahmaloka (Satyaloka), he was not happy. Then Gopa-kumar is thinking, ‘If I would become Brahma, then I would serve more and more’. He chanted this gopal-mantra thinking how he would take the position of Brahma.

Gaura Premanande!
