THE MEANING OF THE MAHA MANTRA

2015

Srila Gurudevs Skype call to devotees from Santos, Brazil

Maha means ‘great’ and Mantra means ‘mystic power’.

So, according to Vaisnava philosophy, this Maha Mantra is:

Hare Krsna
Hare Krsna
Krsna Krsna
Hare Hare
Hare Rama
Hare Rama
Rama Rama
Hare Hare

In this Maha Mantra, there are 16 names and 32 syllables.

So first, that is called Hare. Hare means Radhe. In sanskrit word, Srimati Radhika’s original name, that is called Hara. Srimati Radhika, She steals the heart of Krsna with Her sweet divine love, for this regard She is called Hara. “Hare Krsna mano iti hara". So according to the vocative case, that is called Hare, that means ‘He Srimati Radhike’.

Krsna means: Krs-Na. Krs, this verbal root Krs, means to attract. So Krsna, He attracts all the living entities towards Him and Na means that He gives pleasure to all  the livings entities.

So, Hare Krsna means Radhe Krsna. And Hare Rama, Rama means “Ramayan titi Rama”, Krsna, He is always playing with Srimati Radhika, so Krsna’s one name is called Radha Raman. So in this way, in the Maha Mantra there are 8 couple of names:
Hare Krsna
Hare Krsna
Krsna Krsna
Hare Hare
Hare Rama
Hare Rama
Rama Rama
Hare Hare

It means:
Radhe Krsna
Radhe Krsna
Krsna Krsna
Radhe Radhe
Radhe Rama
Radhe Rama
Rama Rama
Radhe Radhe

Krsna, He always stays with His internal potency, svarupa sakti, Srimati Radhika. So according with this philosophy, Hare Krishna means Radhe Krishna: Krishna always stays with Srimati Radhika.

Bhakti means devotional service, yoga means to add, to connect, that means, how to connect with the Lord with the devotional service to Lord.

In  Srimad Bhagavad Gita´s first sloka there is:

dhrtarastra uvacha
dharma-ksetre kuru-ksetre samaveta yuyutsavah
mamakah pandavas caiva kim akurvata sañjaya
[Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: O Sañjaya, after assembling in the place of pilgrimage at Kurukṣetra, what did my sons and the sons of Pāṇḍu do, being desirous to fight? (BG 1.1)]

Dhritarastra asked to Sanjay: “My sons and Padava´s sons arrived at Kuruksetra, a very auspicious pilgrim place – dharma ksetra – and they are going to fight with each other, but now I want to know what are they doing.” Then Sanjay received the mercy of the transcendental vision from Vyasadev and then he spoke.

I gave this example because if you want to see Lord, God, you will need light, the mercy:

om ajnana-timirandhasya jnananjana-salakaya
cakshur unmilitam yena tasmai sri-gurave namah
[I offer my respectful obeisances unto my spiritual master, who has opened my eyes, which were blinded by the darkness of ignorance, with the torchlight of knowledge.]

By the mercy of Guru we receive the transcendental vision, the transcendental light.
