Srila Rupa Gosvami Disappearance Day

Today is a super excellent, very auspicious day because it is the tirobhav tithi of Srila Rupa Gosvamipad, his disappearance day. Every year, Gurudev also used to glorify every night about Sri Rupa Gosvamipad.

Who will give mercy to us? Rupa Gosvamipad or Rupa Manjari? Actually, Rupa Gosvami will give us mercy. 

There are two forms, sadhaka-rupa and siddha-rupa. As sadhaka, he was Rupa Gosvamipad, the eternal associated of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu, and in his transcendental form, he is the eternal associate of the Divine Couple Sri Sri Radha Krsna, Rupa Manjari.

In Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s lila, he is Rupa Gosvamipad and Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu Himself glorifies Sri Rupa Gosvami also. When Caitanya Mahaprabhu met with Rupa Gosvamipad, Mahaprabhu gave him all the treasures of His heart.

Mahaprabhu Himself told to all His devotees, “I gave all My mercy to Rupa and He can describe everything.” And also when Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu was dancing in front the chariot of Lord Jagannath, Mahaprabhu was thinking, “I am Radha and now I am meeting My beloved Krsna.” 

“You are not only a deity, You are the direct manifestation of Nanda-nandan-Krsna” -- Mahaprabhu was absorbed in His mood of Srimati Radhika and He was expressing His moods, dancing and singing.

At that time, Svarupa Damodar recited one verse. The purport of this verse is that after a long separation when the lover and beloved meet together, what kind of expression comes to the core of their hearts? Svarupa Damodar explains this verse: “He is my same beloved and now my heart is completely melted.” Again and again, Svarupa Damodar recited it.

And Caitanya Mahaprabhu dances and sings in the same mood. Then Mahaprabhu recited one verse.

No one can understand why Caitanya Mahaprabhu was reciting this verse, it is a mundane sloka. Mundane lover and beloved, how they express their hearts. The simple meaning is that a lady, after her marriage ceremony, went to her husband house. Then after a few days, she returned back to her father’s house and all her sakhis asked about her household life, “How are you feeling your household life?” And she answered, “I am not happy with this. I want to return back before my married life. Before my married life, I used to meet with my boyfriend at the bank of the river, a very nice and beautiful place, sweet breeze coming, the river flowing very nicely [with the sound], kal kal kal. In this way and in a completely full moon night and the rays of the moon everywhere, enlightening all. And we used to sit at the bank of the river. All completely wild and beautiful. Beautiful flowers there, malati, a sweet fragrance coming. At that time my heart was completely absorbed in these things. We used to forget everything and were completely absorbed with each other, embracing each other and discussing sroto-lila, sensual things. But after a few years we are married and now He is my husband and we are meeting together very freely. But my mind is not happy.”

Why Caitanya Mahaprabhu recited this verse? No one could realize His heart. At that time only Svarupa Damodar could realize and recite the verse.

After a long separation, lover and beloved are meeting together.

What is the meaning of this? What kinds of feelings are coming to them? Bidyapati Candidas, in his song very nicely explains, “After a long separation, Srimati Radhika expresses Her heart to Her beloved.” Srimati Radhika told, “Even if somebody gives Me lots of jewels or gold I cannot be one second away from My beloved Govinda. My beloved Govinda is as like the blanket in the winter time. In the winter time, We are like the umbrella.” So, in this way Srimati Radhika expresses Her heart.

And these are the things that Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu was realizing and only Svarupa Damodar also realized. Because of this, He kept reciting this verse again and again.

That year, Rupa Gosvamipad came and He realized the heart of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu. After Ratha-yatra, Rupa Gosvami returned back to the place of Haridas Thakur and at night time Rupa wrote the unparalleled sloka with the same mood.

At that time, Rupa Gosvamipad in the morning went to take bath in the ocean and Caitanya Mahaprabhu came met with Haridas Thakur. And Caitanya Mahaprabhu suddenly found the paper with the sloka. When He read, His heart completely melted and tears fell down. At the same time, Rupa Gosvamipad came and paid his obeisances unto the lotus feet of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

And Caitanya Mahaprabhu asked, “Rupa, did you write this?” And very humbly Srila Rupa Gosvamipad said, “Yes.” At that time, Caitanya Mahaprabhu asked Svarupa Damodar and Ray Ramananda, “How did he know my heart? Last night I also recited one verse of the same mood of this He wrote. How did He know?” 

Svarupa Damodar said, “This is Your mercy, without Your mercy, no one can realize Your heart.”

Brahma-stuti. Brahmaji also told this, “Without the mercy of Lord no one can understand about Lord.” In the same way, Svarupa Damodar told, “Without Your mercy, how Rupa could realize Your heart?” Then Mahaprabhu told, “Yes, when Rupa met Me in Prayag, at that time I gave him all the treasures of My heart in his hear.”

And Mahaprabhu instructed him, “You have to go to Vrndavan and fulfill My four desires:

First: To manifest all holy places of Vraja that are unmanifested. You have to manifest them, Vrajbhumi’s sweet places of pastimes of the Divine Couple Radha and Krsna.

Second: You have to manifest the vigraha.

Third: You have to manifest suddha-sad-grantha, especially raganuga-bhakti e vaidhi-bhakti. This is very important.

And forth: You have to manifest a suddha-sadacar-grantha.”

So, according to the desires of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu, Srila Rupa Gosvami satisfied Him. He manifested many Vraja’s places, performed his bhajana and sadhana and manifested radha-govinda-vigraha. He wrote many slokas also, especially Lalit-madhav, Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu, Ujjal-nilmani, thousands of thousands of slokas He wrote, especially Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu and Ujjal-nilmani.

Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu explains santa, dasya, sakhya, vatsalya-rasa, and madhurya-rasa it touched. And Ujjal-nilmani grantha is a fully madhurya-grantha. Especially He very humbly always used to pay obeisances to his elder brother Sanatana Gosvamipad. All his granthas, mostly have this. He always explains how we become raganuga-bhaktas.

Before, Caitanya Mahaprabhu explained about bhakti-katha but Rupa explains bhakti and bhakti-rasa.

Before Mahaprabhu, everybody thought that bhakti and bhakti-rasa are the same, but accordingly, to the mercy of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu, Rupa Gosvamipad very nice discriminated what is bhakti and what is bhakti-rasa, that they are not the same.

So He first gave a designation of suddha-bhakti. Srila Visvanath Cakravarti Thakur explains how the acaryas used to explain bhakti. There were many slokas, many definitions of bhakti. But Rupa Gosvami very nicely and in a scientific way gave the definition of bhakti: anyabilasita sunyan jñana karmady anavrtam anukulyena krsnanu silanam bhaktir uttama - verse 18:35 - the highest definition of bhakti.

Then Srila Rup Gosvami explains how we can enter in bhakti-rasa, giving the definition of staiy-bhava. What is the meaning of staiy-bhav? A fixed mood will come, then four ingredients will come, vibhav, anubhav, satik, davisari… In this way, more 49 types of ingredients will also come and then you relish the bhakti-rasa.

So, without the association of Srila Rupa Gosvamipad and then Srila Raghunath das Gosvami, we cannot relish the bhakti-rasa.

We have to come to Srila Rup Gosvamipad and then to Srila Raghunatha Gosvamipad, because without taking shelter of Srila Raghunatha das Gosvamipad we cannot understand bhakti-rasa and we cannot relish bhakti-rasa.

In this verse, Srila Raghunath again and again pays his obeisances to Srimati Radhika and He explains how we should follow the steps of Srila Rupa Gosvamipad.

In this way, without the mercy of Srila Raghunath das Gosvami we cannot enter in the service of Srila Rupa Gosvamipad.

[Question: Why did Mahaprabhu ask the suddha-sadacar-grantha?]

Without entering in suddha-vaisnav-sadacar we cannot enter in suddha-bhakti. If you don’t follow the rules and regulations of the scriptures, you will not enter in suddha-bhakti

Srila Jiva Gosvamipad says, “One who do not follow the rules and regulations of the scriptures, but who thinks, ‘I am an one pointed devotee’ is not even a bhakta. And for not follow the rules and regulations, he makes a disturbance in the society and to the others too.”

Bhakti is not like this. You have to follow the rules and regulations of the sastra. So Bhaktivinoda Thakura very clearly explains that those who thinks they are manjaris – [verse] – one who doesn’t attend its adhikari, qualification and thinks, “I am that manjari” is useless.

For this regard, Caitanya Mahaprabhu said to follow all the rules and regulations of the scriptures and step by step you will attend your perfection goal. So, you have to follow suddha-sadacar. Otherwise, you will become sahajiya or brahmavadi  (impersonalist).
