THE EXPERTISE OF KRSNA’S WORDS

Krsna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Svayam Bhagavan. For this regard, He is called the Supreme Enjoyer. All the living entities are called “enjoyed”. Other words [for this] are visay and asray. Visay means the object of divine love and asray is the shelter of the divine love. Srimati Radhika is called asray-vigraha, the shelter of divine love, asray-vigraha-srimati-radhika. Krsna is called visay-vigraha, the object of divine love. So Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Prabhupad explained that the aim and object of all gaudiya-vaisnavas is to serve Krsna, the visay-vigraha, object of the divine love, under the guidance of asray-vigraha-srimati-radhika.
Because without the guidance of Srimati Radhika we can’t attain Krsna. Srimati Radhika completely and absolutely controls Krsna with Her divine love. This is the process.
nirantaram vasi-krta-pratiti-nanda-nandane
kada karisyasiha mam krpa-kataksa-bhajanam?
(Sri Radha-krpa-kataksa-stava-raja, verse 3)
…Krpa katasha very clearly explains that Srimati Radhika feels and controls Krsna with Her divine love. If you serve Krsna, you have to take shelter in the lotus feet of Srimati Radhika. Without taking shelter in Srimati Radhika, no one can attain Krsna. According to the tattva-darsan (philosophy), Krsna is called aradhyo-bhagavan. Visvanath Cakravartipad very clearly explains:
aradhyo bhagavan vrajesa-tanayas tad-dhama vrndavanam
ramya kacid upasana vraja-vadhu-vargena ya kalpita
srimad-bhagavatam pramanam amalam prema pumartho mahan
sri-caitanya-mahaprabhor matam idam tatradaro nah parah
(Caitanya-manjusa)
Aradhyo bhagavan vrajesa-tanayas, Vrajendra-nandan-Syamasundar is our istadev. This is true. And His abode, dham, is called Brndavan-dham. Krsna manifests many forms in Vaikhunta, Ayodhya, Dvarka, Mathura and also Brndavan. This is true. The same Krsna manifests Himself in many forms but His original form is Nanda-nandan-Krsna or Yasoda-nandan, the son of Nanda Maharaj and Mother Yasoda. And His abode, dham, is Brndavan-dham. And this Brndavan-dham is called nitya-dham (eternal dham). And He performs sweet lila in His Brndavan-dham. So for this regard Krsna doesn’t go one step out of Brndavan.
vrndavanam parityajya padam ekam na gacchati
(Laghu-bhagavatamrta 1.1.21, Srila Rupa Gosvami)
Krsna says: “I never give one step out of Brndavan”. Brndavan-Krsna always remains in Brndavan. Dvarkadish-Krsna remains in Dvarkapuri. Mathuradish-Krsna lives in Mathurapuri. I’m speaking about two expansions of Krsna: Mathuradish-Krsna, the controller of Mathura and Dvarkadish-Krsna. Do you understand? Nanda-nandan-Krsna has two manifestations (prakash): Mathuradish-Krsna and Dvarkadish-Krsna. In aprakrat-goloka-brndavan, there are three dhamas: Dvarka, Mathura and Brndavan. But Brndavan is the topmost. And Krsna completely, absolutely manifests all His activities, beauty and other things in Brndavan. The three “ivelies”) are there: positively, comparatively and superlatively. So Dvarka is called purna. Mathura is called purnataram and Brndavan is called purnatama. In Dvarkapuri, Krsna performs His sweet lila with His own consorts.

So Raghunath das Gosvami says: (verse). Dvarkapuri is higher than Vaikuntha. Why? Because in Vaikuntha only Narayan and Laksmi [are there], the same Krsna manifests His form in Vaikuntha as Narayan. But only two people are there: Laksmi and Narayan. But Narayan never stays only in Vaikuntha. (verse). Lord Narayan Himself told: “He Narad! I don’t stay only in Vaikuntha-dham. Where do I stay? Where my devotee is glorifying My pastimes I need to go there”.

So sometimes Laksmi-devi feels alone in Vaikuntha-dham. Because sometimes Lord Narayan used to go killing the demons. He doesn’t take Laksmi-devi with Him. He goes alone. So that means Laksmi-devi feels alone in Vaikuntha-dham and Lord Narayan is always very serious, grave. He never smiles and very rarely He talks with His wife Laksmi-devi. They have no sons or daughters. So for this regard Laksmi-devi is not also happy. Married life but no sons, no children, no daughters: no happiness. And husband also not staying together… If your husband is not there, what to do? No sons, no daughters, and you are feeling alone; maybe you can watch the TV (laughing). But for how long will you watch the TV? This is another question. So, Laksmi-devi feels like this.

But Dvarkapuri is higher than Vaikuntha because in Dvarkapuri the same Krsna lives with His 16.108 queens. And each of His queens has ten sons and one daughter. So how many sons and daughters of Krsna there? Many. You can multiply and you will see. And also their sons, grandsons, great-grandsons are there. Even also Baladev prabhu is there.

Krsna is laughing, joking, playing different kinds of games there. So, for this regard, Dvarkapuri is higher than Vaikuntha. And Krsna performs this lila as like a human being lila, with a very nice and beautiful family, joyful family are there. Everybody completely happy, enjoying different kinds of activities. Almost every day there is maybe a birthday because 16.108 wives and eleven children of each and the others, maybe three, four or five birthdays per day. This is the nature also. Every day a nice celebration is going on there, different types, marriage ceremonies of the sons, grandsons, birthdays, marriage anniversaries. Krsna is very happy there.

Once Narada Rsi came in Dvarkapuri and became very surprised. Krsna was performing lila with all the queens. Krsna manifests many forms, but how Krsna maintains them? With His opulence. At that time, Krsna was with Rukmini, Satyabama and other queens and Narada Rsi noticed that Krsna manifested many of His forms. In this way, Krsna maintains all His queens, wives, in Dvarkapuri. Because Krsna is Bhagavan. And there is no doubt, only the yogis can manifest the fifty forms.

Saubari Rsi wanted to marry with the daughters of Mandata. But fifty daughters, princesses, denied him. They didn’t want to marry with Saubari Rsi because He performed hard austerities in the water of the Yamuna for ten thousand years. Without eating, without sleeping, so his body became completely skinny. If one person stays many years in the water, too much musg comes. So his body was completely blue with so much musg. This is the nature. For this regard, no princess wanted to marry him. Then Saubari Rsi with his yoga power manifested a very nice, handsome and attractive young body. Because He was a yogi. Before He was vey skinny. Now, He was very attractive as like a rasagula. As like a nice and handsome cinema actor. Nice hair, nice eyes. When he came at the place of Mandata, all the princesses were very eager to marry him. And with fifty forms he married all of them. In the same way Krsna is called Yogesvara, the supreme controller of the yogis. In the Bhagavad-gita, Krsna says “I am Yogesvara”. If the yogis with their mystic powers manifest many forms, Krsna undoubtedly also manifests many forms. So He manifested many forms in Dvarkapuri and stayed with all the queens of the palace, enjoying sweet lila with them. So Narada Rsi saw these things.

In this way, Krsna performs sweet lila in Dvarkapuri. But Raghunath das Gosvami explained that Brndavan lila is the topmost. Brndavan-Krsna has the nava-yauvana form, always youthful form. And He is very cute, very handsome and attractive; He intoxicates the heart of all the Braj-gopis. So Krsna is called Dhira-Lalita-nayaka. And He is very expert in joking. (verse) - And He speaks very nice and beautiful sweet words. Eloquent words that intoxicate the hearts of the gopis. Words very sweet, eloquent and false. Not perfect words, false words. Giving an example, once one crow got one piece of sweet. He was sat in the top of the branch of the tree. In the meantime one jackal noticed and thought: “how to get the sweet of the mouth of the crow”. The jackal was very clever, he used many sweet and eloquent words to glorify the crow, only sweet words, but not the truth, only false glorifications: “hey crow, you are very sweet, very attractive and cute. Thou you are black, very nice, beautiful and delightful, so much effulgence comes from your body”.

(verse). Krsna once told this to the gopis. The gopis had criticized Krsna: “He Krsna, how comes light from You? You are blackish, no one likes You”. Then Krsna replied: “Why do you say this? Look this thing. Yamuna is also blackish and everybody drinks the water of the Yamuna. Clouds are also blackish, especially in summertime (june, july), when the black clouds come and everybody hankers for one drop of rain. So no one can neglect the black. So why do you criticize Me just because I am black”.

So, in the same way the jackal told: “those who are blackish have so much effulgence coming from the body. You are very beautiful and attractive. Look your nose, eyes, very beautiful and attractive. But I never heard your sweet voice. Because all the limbs of your body are very beautiful and attractive, so maybe your voice is very sweet also. So please, sing one song. I want to listen to one song from your mouth”. So in this way when the jackal glorified the crow, the crow became very proud: “oh, this is true”. If someone glorifies to you: “oh, you are very nice, etc..”, then you say: “yes, yes”. So the silly crow became very proud. And He said: “yes, I can sing a very nice song”. “Yes, please, please, sing one song, I want to listen”. Then the crow sang: “craaang, craaang”. And automatically he opened his mouth and the sweet fell down. Then the jackal said: “yes, continue, sing more!” And the clever jackal took the sweet and run away. And still now the silly crow is singing.

So in this way, gopis said to Krsna: “He Krsna, You speak very nice, sweet and eloquent words, even those who are intelligent and sober people sometimes confuse themselves with Your different kinds of activities”. Especially Brahmaji was also completely confused and bewildered about the activities of Krsna. Because Brahma thought that maybe Krsna is Bhagavan because Krsna killed the snake Jarasura and Agasura, stopping its life-air, send it to the sky, to the space, and when the demon came back, it entered in the toe nail of Krsna. Then Brahmaji thought the Krsna could be Bhagavan because sastra also explains: those who are killed by Lord Krsna, Bhagavan, Narayana, get the oneness with Brahman. Krsna killed the demon, and the demon entered in the toe nail of Krsna. So Brahmaji noticed this and He thought: “Krsna is Bhagavan, He is Narayan, this is true, the original Narayan”.

Next day Brahmaji saw Krsna in another lila with His cowherd boys. Krsna taking the prasada with His cowherd boys that were feeding Krsna with their own remnants, that prasada of them mixed with Krsna’s saliva and Krsna was taking. Krsna was joking, laughing with them, a completely innocent baby. Krsna were perfoming this lila. When Brahmaji noticed became very surprised. Because our sastra says that who is Bhagavan, Narayan, does not take the remnants of any of His devotees. Not even from His wife Laksmi-devi. Narayan does not take Her remnants. She cannot give it to Narayan. She takes His remnants, this is true. So Brahmaji thought: “If Krsna is Bhagavan, original Narayan, how possible He takes the remnants of His friends of low cast?” Narayan tattva is also brahmana-tattva. According to the cast system, high cast Narayan is brahmana-tattva. But Krsna is low-cast, vaisya, herd of cows. So that time, Brahmaji was completely confused if Krsna is Bhagavan or not, Narayan or not. So for this regard, Brahmaji experimentally stole Krsna’s calves and cowherd boys.

Krsna’s lilas are very difficult to understand. Even Krsna’s rasa-lila confused Parikisit Mahraj. Krsna comes to this material world to reestablish the varnasram-dharma: Krsna says: “I come to this material world to reestablish the varnasram-dharma, kill the demons and protect the brahmanas, this is My duty. (verse). But now Krsna is performing rasa-dance with the gopis. And these gopis are the wives of other gopas, so Parikisit Maharaj asked this question: “What kind of dharma He came to establish? I cannot undertand. If Krsna would appear in this material world to establish the dharma, varnasram-dharma, the rules and regulations of the society, so what’s this dharma? To associate with the others’ wives? Dancing, singing, embracing, kissing. Is this dharma? This is adharma! So what kind of dharma did He establish?”

So this krsna-lila is completely complicated. Not so easy to understand. You may understand Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s lila, but Krsna’s lila is very difficult to understand, especially this type of lila, rasa-lila, Krsna’s top most lila. Without rasa-lila, what’s the meaning of Srimad Bhagavatam? Nothing. Srimad Bhagavatam’s all lilas are included inside rasa-lila. Jay jay ujjvala rasa sarva rasa sara parakiya bhave jata brajete pracar. Krsna-lila is very complicated to understand, so the gopis say: (verse). Krsna is very expert to speak very nice, sweet and eloquent words that intoxicate the heart of the gopis and Srimati Radhika’s also.

Once Radha and Krsna were laughing and joking and Krsna told: “He Candre!” Then Srimati Radhika became very angry. Very quickly, Srimati Radhika’s mind became very disturbed, She did mana. Then Krsna tried to pacify Her: “What happened? Why are You angry with Me?” And She told: “You are staying with Me but remembering Candravali?? She’s my rival! Why are You calling her and thinking about Candravali, My rival?” That time Krsna told: “No, no, I did not remember Candravali”. “So why did You say ‘Candre’?!” “You did not listen My complete word: He Candramane!” Candramane means ‘one’s face like the moon’. But He did not say this, He said ‘Candre’, not ‘Candramane’. ‘Candra’ means ‘moon’ and ‘mane’ means ‘face’. Then Srimati Radhika smiled: “why did not You say the complete word? You stopped: ‘He Candre!’”

Once in India was written in a place: ‘Don’t urine here!’ That meant that if you urine there, you’ll get punishment. But if someone writes with one coma in the phrase: ‘Don’t, urine here’, people will think that if you don’t urine there, you will get the punishment! (laughing). That means: how to read, how to speak, another meaning can come.

Then Krsna explained to Her: “I wanted to speak this way”. So Krsna is very expert in speaking, Krsna’s eyes are like lotus, very nice and beautiful blossom lotus eyes, His lotus eyes intoxicate the hearts of the gopis. Everybody completely intoxicated. Because the petal of the lotus has a little reddish color. In the same way, who is Bhagavan, Lord, has the eyes with a little reddish color. This is the symptom of Bhagavan. Jiva cannot become God, Lord, Bhagavan. Who is Bhagavan has very nice, beautiful and attractive eyes. Long eyes, with a little reddish colour, as like lotus. Lord’s eyes are like the petal of the lotus. So, one of Krsna’s names is Pundarikaksa. Om apavitrah pavitro va/sarva vastham gato api va/yah smret pundarikaksam sa/bahya abhyan taram sucih. This is a mantra-snan. Keep the water in your hand and sprinkle: om sri visnu sri visnu sri visnu. Every day, when you wake up, after taking bath, you take the water in your hand and say this mantra. Remember this sloka from Arcana-dipka.

So Krsna is very expert in intoxicate the hearts of all the living entities with His sidelong glance. Brndavan-Krsna is very expert on how to speak and intoxicate the heart of all the living entities. And He is always in a youthful form, nava-yauvana.

Brahma-samhita glorifies about Krsna, His always youthful form, not more than ten or twelve years old, very attractive, very expert also in laughing and joking, Brndavan-Krsna. And all about Him is very beautiful and attractive, His form, His dham and His associated ones, parikar; gopis also are very beautiful and attractive. This is true.

Because Krsna manifests His form according to two things: His dham and His associated ones, parikaras. Rupa Gosvamipad explains that in Brndavan, Krsna always stays with Srimati Radhika and He holds Srimati Radhika in His left side. At that time, Srimati Radhika beauty and Krsna’s beauty are unparalleled. Divine couple, Radha and Krsna’s form is very beautiful and attractive. For this regard Rupa Gosvamipad explains in this way: (verse). The beauty of Krsna and Srimati Radhika intoxicates all the Laksmis of Vaikuntha. Even Rukmini and Satyabhama become very surprised. So try to understand these three things – Krsna (His own form), His own parikaras and His own dhama.

Narayan and His parikar, Laksmi-devi; His dhama, Vaikuntha, full of opulence. In Ayodhya, Sita-devi is there. In Dvarkapuri, Rukmini, Satyabhama, Baladev prabhu, His sons and daughters, are there. In Mathura, Vasudev, Devaki, Ugrasena are there. Uddhav is also there. But in Brndavan, who is His associated ones, parikar? Nanda, Yasoda, Subal, Sridam, especially the gopis and among the gopis, Srimati Radhika. Candravali are also there. So in this way, Krsna manifests His form, according to His dham and His parikar. The same Krsna, according to His dham and parikar manifests His sweet form, madhurya form. This is the process.
aradhyo bhagavan vrajesa-tanayas tad-dhama vrndavanam
ramya kacid upasana vraja-vadhu-vargena ya kalpita
Gopis worship Krsna with their divine love. With their different activities, bhav. And [they have] so much love and affection with Krsna. You cannot compare the gopis’ love and the queens of Dvarka’s love for Krsna. [There is a] Completely extreme love and affection in the hearts of the gopis, [the way] how they love Krsna. Everything depends on their sambandha, relationship. Love depends on two things, sambandha (knowledge of the relationship) and possessiveness, mamata. Ananya-mamata visnau mamata prema-sangata….(BRS 1.4.2). So the first is called sambandha-jñana (knowledge of the relationship). This is the duty of guru. When the disciple is completely and absolutely surrendered to the lotus feet of guru, guru gives the knowledge of relationship in the heart of his disciple. (verse). Narottam das Thakur that when the sambandha-jñana comes, then He [the disciple] never give up guru and Krsna. He never falls down. Sambandha-jñana, doesn’t matter if it’s with the diksa-guru or siksa-guru. This is very important. As like the calf that depends on its mother. So much deep attachment comes, asakti. In asakti and bhava, the sambandha-jnana will be complete. [But] It starts in sraddha. When becomes mature, sradha, sadhu-sanga, bhajana-kriya, anartha-nvrti, nistha, ruci, then asakti and bhava. When the sadhaka comes in the stage of bhav, then sambandha-jñana becomes completely mature. This is the process. But it starts in sraddha. So now you are on the way, be very careful. Always I say: never give up guru and never give up harinam. Hariman means Krsna. How to develop your sambandha-jnana with guru and Krsna? Chanting the holy names, listening to hari-katha and serving, that way you will develop your sambandha-jnana.
