Q: What should we think at the time of Gaur-arati?
A: Mangalarati is the arati of the end of night, nisanta-lila. And Gaur-arati is the time which Krsna is returning back from the herding of the cows. At that time, the mood of the gopis is the same mood of the devotees of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu in Nabdvip dham.
There are two things here. One is what Caitanya Mahaprabhu is doing in Nabdvip dham[at that time]. The other is [what] Krsna [is doing].
There are two kinds of asta kaliya-lila, one is Gaura-asta kaliya-lila and the other is Radha-Krsna-asta kaliya-lila.
So, Gaur-arati happens in Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s asta kaliya-lila. “Jaya Jaya gaur cander arotiko sobha janavi tata vane jaga mana lobha”. So, [this is about] how Caitanya Mahaprabhu is taking bath in the Ganges, then Caitanya Mahaprabhu takes a sit at the ratna-simhasan. Bosiyache gora cãda ratna-simhasane. Caitanya Mahaprabhu sited in a Golden throne and how the devotees express their mood - Gadadhar, Nityananda, Advaita Acarya - this is the mood, and they also are doing arati to Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

In the same way, Krsna is returning back of herding the cows and how the gopis from a little bit far away are expressing their sentiments, bhav. Because Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Radha-Krsna in different waysare expressing their activities. Gaur-lila and Govinda-lila.
Mahaprabhu’s lila has a little bit the dasya-mood. But that dasya-mood is not that Ayodhya-dasya, it is the separation mood of the gopis. That means that when Krsna disappeared from Srimati Radhika in Srngar-vat, Srimati Radhika felt pangs of separation from Krsna. Kasi kasi (verse): “He Krsna, where are You??”
Srimati Radhika told: “I cannot walk…”, so Krsna told: “ok, You cannot walk so You sit on My shoulder”. While Srimati Radhika tried to sit on Krsna’s shoulder, Krsna disappeared and Srimati Radhika felt pangs of separation from Krsna. So at that time Srimati Radhika said: (verse), that means: “I am your maidservant!”
Generally, according to Her mood, Srimati Radhika never says: “I am Your servant”. Maybe She could say: “YOU are My servant!” (laughing) but when She is in separation mood, Srimati Radhika says: “I am your servant” (verse).
This is separation mood. In separation mood, at that time She had a dasya-bhav. It is not the dasya-bhav of Hanuman in Ayodhya.
Because when the separation mood comes, it creates so much humility, dhanya. And when dhanya comes, automatically comes dasya-bhav too. But this is the highest dasya-bhav. The separation mood dasya-bhav.
So, the gopis express their sentiments a little bit far from Krsna.
In Caitanya Mahaprabhu-lila, when He is sitting, at that time Gadhadar and Svarup Damodar expressed their sentiments. Because Caitanya Mahaprabhu has different and different kinds of devotees: Vaikuntha devotees, Srivas Thakur is there. Murari Gupta is there, the incarnation of Hanuman. Differentkinds. All of them are there, but accordingly to their own bhav (mood), they express their sentiments for Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu.
Mainly, Gadhadar Pandit and Svarup Damodar are there. They have the highest mood, Srimati Radhika’s Braj mood.
So, according to their mood, Caitanya Mahaprabhu expresses His different, different sentiments.
Radha-Krsnaare meeting together and then Lalita, Visakha and the sakhis also express their sentiments. “Jaya jayaRadha-Krsna yugala Milan arotikoroye lalitadi sakhi gan.”At that time, how Radha and Krsna manifest their very nice and beautiful transcendental form. (verse)
Srila Rup Gosvamipad composed this verse (verse). Especially in the ras-dance, Krsna manifested His topmost and unique form, because Krsna is Bhagavan, He manifests His many forms according to the mood of His devotee.
For those who are devotees of Vaikuntha He manifests His Narayan-svarup (form). For those in dasya, He manifests His form in Ayodhya as Ramacandra. Krsna manifests His topmost form in Golok-Vrndavan, especially in the ras-dance because the gopis are there. But the same Krsna manifests His form to Candravali in a different mood.
But Krsna manifests His excellent topmost form in front of Srimati Radhika, because everything depends on the gradation of the prem, and the love of Srimati Radhika you cannot compare with the prem of any other gopis. “Radha-prem sada siromani”. SrimatiRadha’s prem is the crown-jewel of all the premas. You can read this on my book “Jay Sri Radhe”, the Radha-tattva that I explained in Russia.(verse)
Srimati Radhika intoxicates all sakhis in there. (verse) All of them. Even Candravali is intoxicated with the beauty of Srimati Radhika. Thou, Candravali is always envious or jealous with Srimati Radhika. But when Candravali looks to Srimati Radhika’s beauty and activities, she becomes surprised. (verse)
Even the queens of Dvaraka: Rukmini and Satyabhama, when they met with Srimati Radhika and saw Srimati Radhika’s bhava-madhurya, the sweetness of Her sentiments, at that time they become also surprised and their head started to spin.
What kinds of Srimati Radhika’s beauty and sentiments towards Krsna? As like three rivers - Ganga, Yamuna and Sarasvati - meeting together and making a whirlpool.
In the same way, when Rukmini and Satyabhama saw Srimati Radhika’s sentiments (bhav) they became completely surprised. Even they thought: “If I get one dust of the lotus feet of Srimati Radhika, my life will be successful.” Because Srimati Radhika has mahabhav, She has the last limit of mahabhav. She is the last limit of mahabhav.
Bhav, mahabhav, …and madanako-mahabhav, you may not understand what is madanako-mahabhav, the highest mood is in there. In the separation and meeting, meeting and separation, what kinds of sentiments are there? If you go to the middle of the ocean, then you can see what kind of waves are coming. Sometimes you can see in the internet the big, big ships, huge ones, with maybe 20 storages.
When I was traveling in one European country, going from one place to another, I took a ship. This was about 12 or 14 years ago, and the ship was in the middle of the ocean. That big shipwith about 20 storages. It was like a big, big building. You cannot imagine how it was like a big building. And inside there were swimming pools, football field, all kinds of entertainment inside the ship as like if it was a small town. Many rooms, malls, everything was there. You can cycle, there is a road in there. You cannot believe where areyou, in the middle of the ocean or in a town?!
So, when you come in the middle of the ocean, sometimes there are big storms, hurricanes. And at that time the ship goes up-and-down, and there are big, big waves and water splashing and coming inside the ship. Then you can see that all the 20storages’ship about to sink in the water… and again coming up! The waves are up… and down…You cannot believe.
Sometimes I was sleeping on my bed and I was about to fall down, because the ship was up and down, up and down, shaking. I could not sleep at night time also. It was a small room with two beds, I was sleeping in one and one brahmacari was in another bed. Everything in the room, kitchen, bathroom, everything was there in this small room, everything shaking.
Why am I saying this? Because in the same way, in the mahabhav of Srimati Radhika the waves of Her sentiments are like these waves on the middle of the sea. (verse)
You may not understand this language, but in [the book] Ujjval-nilamani, Srila Rup Gosvamipad explains what kind of sentiments are in Her heart. For this regard “nana-vidha alankar korejhala-mal/ hari-man-vimohan vadana ujjlval / visakhadi sakhi-gan nan rage gaya priya-narma-sakhi jato camar dhulay”
What is said in these verses? “Nana-vidha alankar” means that there are two kinds of ornaments of Srimati Radhika. One is the ornaments of gold, the ornaments She is wearing: necklace, earrings, nose rings, ankle bells, different and different kinds. Twelve types of ornaments.
And another alankar is Her bhav-alankar, the ornaments made of sentiments (verse). Maybe you cannot understand. How Srimati Radhika express Her sentiments towards Krsna...
Sometimes Srimati Radhika did man, then sometimes submission mood, and sometimesman. Sometimes She says: “Oh I don’t want to see Krsna!” Actually, “I don’t want, I don’t want” means “I want”. Two negatives mixed make a positive. “I don’t want” only once, ok, it is a negative. But “I don’t want, I don’t want”, twice, is “I want!” (laughing)
So, in this way there are different anddifferent kinds of sentiments.
If you go to Golok-Vrndavan then you will understand. If I tell you, you cannot understand everything, because this is beyond material conception, jara-atita. In this material world, how is it possible to explain these things? (laughing)
If you go there, all gopis are submerse in divine love towards Radha and Krsna, as like big ocean and big swans that dive down into a big ocean and again come up. That is called prema-samudra, the ocean of divine love is there.
Nana-vidha alankar kore jhalamal. Jhalamal means that with so much jiggling, like when you put many kinds of color lights, red, blue, yellow, when you put these lights for Thakurji, and there is much jiggling: dzzzzz! And sometimes your eyes cannot accept also and you think: “what am I looking at?!”
Sometimes it happens, when there are too much lights jiggling, you cannot see in a proper way. One kind of optical illusion comes. That is called “jhalamal”, because while Srimati Radhika is smiling very nicely with Her beautiful smiling face, Her teeth are like thousands and thousands of moon rays because Her teeth are very white like the rays of the moon coming.
And Her gums are of a so very nice and beautiful reddish color, that you will think that the sun is rising.
So, at the same time, two things are rising: the moon (Her teeth) and the sun (Her gums). But how is this possible if the sun rises in the morning and the moon rises in night time?? But at the same time, moon and sun are rising in the beautiful face of Srimati Radhika! Bolo Brndavan Bihari Laliki jay!
(laughing a lot)
If you go there you will see, how the smile of Srimati Radhika is! And in Srimati Radhika’s smile there is not just one moon and one sun! How many?
32! Her teeth are shining. (laughing). So these [things] are going on there.
And Srimati Radhika’s face is so much beautiful and attractive.
Nana-vidha alankar kore jhalamal hari-mano-bimohan badan ujjval. And She intoxicates the heart of Krsna. Hari-mano, Hari means Krsna. The One who steals the heart of all the living entities. But Srimati Radhika steals the heart of Krsna. So hari-mano-bimohan. Bimohan means that Krsna is completely bewildered with the divine love of Srimati Radhika.
Badan ujjval. So much glittering comes from the face of Radha and Krsna. Both of them are dancing. And Krsna plays the flute and everybody sing:
radha nace krsna nace nace gopi gan man mero bangairi sakhi pavana brndavan
lalita nace visakha nace nace sakhi gan man mero bangairi sakhi pavana brndavan
ganga nace yamuna nace nace nadi gan man mero bangairi sakhi pavana brndavan
How about the bhoga-arati?
Later I will tell you because if I say all to you, you cannot digest. Even thou, it is a very delicious prasad.
At midday, Krsna with His sakhas are coming in one place. Then they take their prasad there with the things they brought from their houses. As like a pic-nic. Then, after the pic-nic, Krsna very cleverly said to their sakhas: “oh sakhas, now you are very tired, take a rest here”, and the cows, calves, they rest on the shade of the trees.
And at that time, Krsna very cleverly takes with Him only the priya-narma-sakhas, maybe Madhumangal and Subal-sakha. He used to go and meet with Srimati Radhika on the bank of Radha-kunda or Surya-kunda. Understand? The midday-lila is on the bank of Radha-kunda and that is called madhyana-kaliya-lila. You are not understanding! (laughing) Pagal, pagal!
And this midday-lila is the highest, very confidencial lila, because the manjaris are serving in many ways. Maybe the swing-lila, water-sporting-lila in Radha-kunda, jal-bihar; boat-sporting lila, different and different kinds of lila.
The swing-lila… jhula jhule radha-damodar vrndavan me / vrndavan me radha kunda me / jhula jhule radha-damodar vrndavan me
We are singing in this way in jhulan-lila.
There is the dan-bhujan-lila, the pic-nic-lila when they takingprasad.
The madhupan-lila too, when they drink the honey. And Krsna is very clever, He did not drink the honey but He gives the honey to all the gopis. If you drink too much honey, your head starts to spin. You can’t even know where you are going, they cannot speak the word “tree”, they say “t-t-t-r-r-r-e-e-e”. Like when people drinks alcohol or take LSD, I’ve never had, people told me. In the same way, Krsna gives the honey to the gopis, and they drink and become like this. But Krsna is very clever. He Himself doesn’t drink the honey, He just pretends to drink it. Putting the bottle on His closed mouth and saying: “Oh! Nice honey!” (laughing)
Q: What is the difference between Radha-prem and Krsna-prem?
A: Krsna-prem means Radha-prem. Krsna-prem is not only one. Krsna-prem is Radha-prem, Krsna-prem is all together. Santa, dasa, vatsalya, sakhya, madhurya, all of them together, is Krsna-prem.
Radha-prem is specifically the madhurya of Srimati Radhika.
Q: Is it correct to think Srila Svami Prabhupad brought to us vaidhi-bhakti and Srila Narayan Gosvami gave us raganug-bhakti?
A: No, no, no. Svami Maharaj gave us raganug-bhakti too, he gave us everything, he wrote all this in Sri Caitanya-Caritamrita, in the commentaries of Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur and Bhaktisiddhanta Prabhupad. He is a rupanug-vaisnav, how is possible he did not give raganug bhakti?!
He told in the beginning that everyone should follow vaidhi-bhakti, but your aim object should be how to attain raganug-bhakti.
If a new person comes (to Krsna consciousness) you have to tell that he should follow the rules, all rules. (verse)
“One who follows the rules and regulations of sastra is qualified to attain the prem-bhakti of Braj.” Then He attainsthis.
